Social Media, Marketing, and HIPAA – Ep 126

 October 20, 2017

By  Donna Grindle

When it comes to social media, marketing, and HIPAA things can get a little dicey. There are certainly many cases where using social media has gone awry in health care cases.  However, when handled correctly, you can actually use social media, marketing, and HIPAA in a sentence without getting chills down your spine.  Today, Janet Kennedy joins us for a discussion on the positive reasons you should be active on social media and the precautions you should take to make sure everything stays in a positive light.

A 5 star review is all we ask from our listeners.

Social Media, Marketing, and HIPAA – Ep 126

Interview with Janet Kennedy host of the Get Social Health podcast

Social Media, Marketing, and HIPAAJanet was originally a guest with us on episode 44 about Social Media Policies way back in March 2016.  She hosts a podcast too called Get Social Health.  Janet’s latest project is a creatives group to help promote accurate information for healthcare on the web.  You can find more details about that at her Healthcare Marketing Network website.

[5:14] Meet Janet Kennedy from the Get Social Health podcast and the Healthcare Marketing Network.

[24:24] Is it worth getting into social media with all the challenges out there?

Where we are today with social media is

If you can’t beat em join em

[28:25] For the most part social media is a very positive experience.  Train your team and set your plans up front and the upside is well worth it.

[30:15] What should be in a social media policy?

The bottom line is patients must give permission for you to mention them on social media.  Most importantly, a social media policy shouldn’t supersede your HR policies about the work environment, professional behavior and how to represent the company.  Train your staff that all of it applies when posting online.

[34:18] How are people using social media and how do you address the statement that if it can’t make me money I don’t want to be involved in it?Social Media, Marketing, and HIPAA

[38:08] Do I need a website if I am doing social media?

Online communications means using social media in one way or another these days.  All businesses need to be active in some way.  You may be promoting your products or your location.  Others may be making sure they are recognized as though leaders in their field.  No matter how you look at it there is some way that most of us need to establish ourselves and our business online.  However, there are plenty of things that must be evaluated and addressed before you just jump out on a platform and start sharing.  Take the time to understand the best uses of social media marketing and HIPAA requirements at the same time.

You can use @GetSocialHealth on Twitter and GetSocialHealth.com to reach Janet as well as via the Healthcare Marketing Network website.

Please remember to follow us and share us on your favorite social media site. Rate us on your podcasting apps, we need your help to keep spreading the word.  As always, send in your questions and ideas!

Remember, HIPAA is not about compliance, it’s about patient care.
