Earlier this month, The White House released a new National Cybersecurity Strategy aimed at building a more resilient digital environment that is easier to defend than to attack and that is secure and safe for all Americans. The focus is to shift the burden of defending the country’s cyberspace towards software vendors and service providers and to stress how essential collaboration between the public and private sectors, as well as with international allies and partners, is for securing the nation against cyber threats.

National Cybersecurity Strategy
[01:24] The White House recently released the National Cybersecurity Strategy document that outlines the updated strategy towards the US resilience in cyberspace. The very first paragraph in the introduction was very interesting. We often don’t think about what a profound difference the internet has made in our lives and our world in a very brief amount of time. But with all the wonderful ways the Internet and technology helps keep us connected, it also has opened the door for misuse, in the form of data theft and extortion, disruption to our critical infrastructure, distributed disinformation and much more.
Path to Resilience in Cyberspace
[10:15] FACT SHEET: Biden-Harris Administration Announces National Cybersecurity StrategyThe fact sheet outlines the shifts in how the US will now allocate roles, responsibilities and resources in cyberspace.
Rebalancing the responsibility to defend cyberspace
We continue to preach that everyone is a part of the cybersecurity team and that your workforce can be your weakest link but also your last line of defense from a cyberattack. This new approach takes the position that we need to ask more from those who are building, controlling and developing the digital ecosystem and less from that one individual who makes a mistake.
The Five Pillar Approach to The Cybersecurity Strategy
[18:12] Defend Critical Infrastructure [27:30] Disrupt and Dismantle Threat Actors [31:37] Shape Market Forces to Drive Security and Resilience [34:58] Invest in Resilient Future [38:12] Forge International Partnerships to Pursue Shared GoalsThe National Cybersecurity Strategy is taking the approach of trying to lesse the responsibility placed on end users for preventing and mitigating cyber attacks. They should participate, but cybersecurity approaches taken by IT teams should aim to prevent it being so easy for a simple click to open the door for a network attack. Basically, we need to rethink our approach to cybersecurity to protect our infrastructures from cyber attacks.
